A Journey Through Time

The Castle Was Created

Built in 1915 at a cost of around $40,000, the Romanesque Revival‑style armory was co‑funded by the city and state. The building housed National Guard drills, officers’ quarters, and support facilities. Upon opening in February 1916, the hallmark drill hall hosted military events and quickly transitioned into Rochester’s go‑to civic venue—welcoming dances, graduations, rallies, and civic celebrations.

1916-1970

The Rochester Senior Center

The city purchased The Castle after the Armory moved to a new location in 1970 and converted the building to a Senior Center. The once-open drill hall was converted to three floors; the main floor was used for offices, and the second floor housed a library and other activity spaces. The Senior Center moved in 2016 and became what is now known as 125 LIVE.

Rochester, MN’s Armory

The Minnesota National Guard used the Castle as an Armory, first housing the machine gun company of the Third Minnesota National Guard Regiment. It included officers’ quarters, a dining room, and a drill hall that could house 2,000 people. This space also held rallies and fundraisers to support the troops. After the war ended the space was used for evening dances, club meetings, and boxing matches.

1978-2016

Purchased by the Castle Community LLC

Working with the city the Castle Community LLC purchased The Castle for community use. The first floor was to be converted into a restaurant, an arts center and used book store would be found on the second floor, and the third floor would be used as an open entertainment space.

2018

Arnett Companies Purchases The Castle

The Arnet family purchased and renovated all three floors of The Castle to bring this historic building back to life. The first floor will once again host an elegant restaurant, keeping the original architecture of the building. A wine and whiskey lounge will be created on the second floor, for an elevated dining experience. On the third floor, an open event venue showcases the beauty of this historical site.
